5 refreshing things to do this National Day long weekend 2021

Feeling bummed out by the recent COVID-19 restrictions? While our national day period coincides with Phase 2 Heightened Alert, it is still possible to enjoy fun and meaningful activities to celebrate the nation’s 56th birthday!

Looking for something refreshing to do during the long weekend? The CardsPal team has compiled 5 creative activities to do this National Day holiday from the comforts of your home or with social distancing from other groups. We’re definitely not letting the pandemic stop us from commemorating Singapore’s 56th birthday and celebrating the successes we’ve achieved as one!

1. Embark on a National Heritage Trail

We all have vague snippets of Singapore’s history in our minds, thanks to social studies lessons from our school days. Bring those memories to life! Go on a heritage trail on the streets of Singapore. Grab a friend or go on a solo walk on trails that cover various neighbourhoods. According to Straits Times, the top 5 heritage trails in Singapore are the Balestier, Tiong Bahru, Queenstown, Kampong Glam and Pasir Ris trails. Travelling may be restricted, but you can still have fun as a tourist in your own country.

One of our personal favourites is the Kampong Glam trail as it features the captivating golden-domed Sultan Mosque and buzzing Arab Street and Haji Lane. Averse to exhausting walks under the blazing sun? You’ll be glad to know that the Kampong Glam trail is one of the easiest trails to manoeuvre, taking only about 1 hour and 10 minutes (or 4,350 steps for the step counters amongst us).

What an interesting way to savour the cultural richness of our heritage while immersing yourself in the beauty of the outdoors!

2. Go hiking in Singapore

Worried about having gained a little weight from sitting at home all day? Here’s a fun way to burn off those extra calories from Netflixing and chilling! Put on your hiking shoes and go on foot to explore the underrated sites in Singapore.

Popular hiking spots include the MacRitchie Reservoir, Chestnut Nature Park and Thomson Nature Park which have multiple hiking trails to choose from. Bonus – the breath-taking sights are great material for your social media posts.

Seen your friends posing against the backdrop of a railway track on your Instagram feed? That’s the iconic Rail Corridor located in Bukit Panjang! The Rail Corridor has a long and colourful history as it was once used for transporting goods between Singapore and Malaysia in the 20th century. Besides this rail, you can also head to the nearby Singapore Quarry to spot rare birds and monitor lizards!

3. Take a stroll around the Civic District

Walked past the National Museum and National Gallery before? These are in The Civic District, where Singapore’s historical, architectural and cultural heritage were first established, according to Singapore Tourism Board

This National Day, enjoy a breezy walk around The Civic District to enjoy the magnificent buildings and museums. If you’ve never visited any buildings before, now’s the chance to take the first step!

Visit the National Gallery Singapore and the National Museum of Singapore to see cool artefacts as you imagine yourself in a world of a bygone era. In fact, the history of the National Museum starts from 1849 when it was first opened on Stamford Road, previously called the Raffles Library and Museum. Delve into historical moments of Singapore’s collective imagination to commemorate nation’s 56th birthday!

4. Follow August and his adventures around Singapore

Looking for a fun-filled activity for the young ones at home? Find August, the NDP 2021 mascot, at physical locales in Singapore with your family! These locations include The River Safari, Singapore Zoo, Jurong Bird Park, Science centre and many more, spread across our sunny island!

There are prizes to be won as well. Spot the August standee at selected landmarks and follow August and his adventures at @NDPeeps on Facebook and Instagram for a chance to get your hands on a set of limited-edition “August was Here” game cards.

National Day sing-along

What’s better than singing at home? Singing with friends and family over zoom!

5. Sing-along to National Day songs at home

For the couch potatoes or those who miss belting out the top hits at Teo Heng, this one’s for you. Singapore’s National Day songs not only encapsulates Singapore’s culture and history, but also our collective hopes and dreams for the future.

This National Day, dress up in red and white clothes and sing your heart out to National Day Songs! Proclaim your appreciation for our little red dot with well-loved national day songs such as “Home” and “There’s No Place I’d Rather Be”! It’s more fun especially if you’re singing with your family. Play the songs on Youtube and have a zoom session with friends to see who has the best rendition! The National Day Parade may be postponed to the 21st this year, but you can still celebrate on your own on Singapore’s actual “birth date”!

There’s much to look forward to for the postponed NDP as well. Despite the reduction in the number of participants and spectators at The Float @ Marina this year, the parade is set to be just as exciting, with the NDP planning committee promising that the broadcast would feature special appearances in the heartlands, and also entail a “digitalised and immersive experience with lots of home engagement activities” to keep viewers entertained.

All that singing and dancing sure makes one hungry. Consider take-away options of Singapore’s local dishes from our CardsPal app to enjoy various dining promotions! For example, enjoy Bak Kut Teh, Singapore’s local delight, from New ManLee Bak Kut Teh. This popular restaurant serves Singapore-style white peppery aromatic soup with pork spare ribs, lean meat and pork belly!

Enjoy 10% off the a la carte menu if you have a SAFRA card! Find out more about this deal here (in-app deal, view via mobile phone), and many others on our app.

Singapore’s National Day celebration doesn’t have to be a dull one if you put your heart and mind into creating fun activities for yourself and your family members. We hope these ideas will help make our celebration a little more fun and fulfilling! Happy National Day, everyone!
